Are you planning to visit the fantastic country of Japan in 2020? Whether it be for business or pleasure, you are certainly in for a real treat. The cities of Japan dazzle visitors through unbelievable entertainment, marvellous historic features and some of the wackiest fashion and dining experiences that the world has to offer. During your stay, we imagine that you will want to experience some of the iconic dining experiences for which Japan is known. It’s important to remember, however, that culture is very important in this society, and there are some manners that you should familiarise yourself before dining – especially if you are eating with local clients. Read on to discover everything you need to know.
Sharing Bowls
First thing’s first, you will want to make the most of the menu that you will see. If you’re fortunate enough to be dining in one of the stunning sunshine city restaurants, then you will be tempted to order every single thing on the menu. However, there are plenty of sharing options available so that you can sample as much of the flavours as you desire. This is an incredibly popular way to dine in restaurants, however, you should be sure to not offend others at the table. We recommend that you never eat directly from the sharing bowl. Not only is this not hugely hygienic, but it is considered very bad manners in Japan and may cause offence. Instead, use a separate set of utensils to dish out a portion onto your plate before eating – that way, you can enjoy all the flavours without a bitter atmosphere.
Drinking
When dining in one of the fantastic sunshine city restaurants, you may quickly realise that communal drinks are quite a common thing. Whether this is water, sake, wine or other, communal jugs are a great way to save a little money and share an experience with those around you (as well as making some great talking points if you are with clients). However, one thing you should definitely not do is fill up your own glass. This is considered selfish and will be frowned upon by most locals. Instead, you should offer to fill up your neighbour’s cup, this will not only keep your friends happy, but they will then return the favour so that you can have a refill also. It is also good to remember if you are meeting a client, that the person who extended the invitation pays for the dinner. This is typical in Japanese culture, so if the client invited you and is keen to pay – you should let them and avoid embarrassment and offence.
General Table Rules
Now we’ve covered the two biggies, we’ve got a few smaller tips that you should try to remember while dining at the sunshine city restaurants. Firstly, chopsticks should not be raised above your mouth or rested upon your bowl, this is just the table etiquette – like placing your knife and fork neatly once you’ve finished a meal. Secondly, you shouldn’t take slurping as bad manners – it is in fact a sound that shows appreciation, so slurp away, especially if you’re enjoying the soup. Lastly, you should always return your plates to how you found them at the start of your meal. Again this is just a common courtesy that you should follow to avoid displaying bad manners.
Are you planning a ski trip to Japan this year? If so, lucky you! The prefectures of Japan are varied, plentiful and awe-inspiring, with their natural beauty and of course, fantastic winter sporting facilities. We are sure that this is something that you can’t wait to tick off that bucket list, and you will want the experience of a lifetime, with minimal stresses, drama or fussing. However, planning a ski trip to a destination that you have never been to before can be daunting, to say the least, and hours can be spent scrolling through endless articles, advice pages and hotel FAQs trying to find all the information you need. So, to help you out, we have a few travel tips to take into consideration when planning your Japan Ski Trip. Read on to find out more.
Location, location, location
Now, we know this may seem obvious, but it’s important to remember that Japan is HUGE. So, if you have any cities/sites that you really do not want to miss while you’re visiting on a ski trip, then it’s probably best that you choose a ski destination that’s only a couple of hours away. For example, the Karuizawa Ski Resort is close to both Nagano and Tokyo, meaning that you can get to these cities with only a little bit of planning – and spontaneity can be afforded! Whereas if you wanted to visit Tokyo but you’ve booked a stay in Hokkaido, then you’re looking at a couple of hours flight that will need plenty of planning and forward-thinking.
Travel
Secondly, you will want to think about how you’re going to get around. If you want your ski holiday to be just that – skiing, then you may not have thought too hard about how you’re going to get around. Well, one of our favourite things about Japan is the fantastic public transport that it has to offer. Incredibly speedy, super-efficient and perfectly punctual, the trains of Japan will certainly get you where you need to go. We highly recommend that you choose to fly into somewhere that you can easily connect to a train – so that you don’t have to figure out the bus timetables (which are rarely translated), or hire a car. Of course, if you want to hire a car that will not be a problem, but you will need to think about revising Japanese road signs and a few keywords so that you don’t find yourself in a bit of a pickle when getting to your Karuizawa Ski Resort.
Check out the Facilities
This last point cannot be stressed enough – check out the facilities of your hotel. You will want your resort to have varied, exciting slopes and trails that you/your family can enjoy, and you may even want to hire equipment – so it’s always worth checking the quality of what they offer. Furthermore, you should check that the hotel has an onsen for guests like the Karuizawa Ski Resort does. This is not only a quintessential Japanese experience that you should enjoy, but it also has tremendous benefits for your body that it will thank you for after long days out in the snow. These include soothing aching muscles, smoothing out dried skin and aiding a great nights sleep.
Japan has many unique and magnificent qualities. From the futuristic fashion icons and Modern buildings to the rich culture and heritage, it is hardly surprising that the sites of Japan are on countless bucket lists. One of the most iconic features of Japan is the stunning cherry blossoms that bloom across the country each year. Clouds of pink petals adorn the streets and are widely considered as a symbol of Japan, bringing in millions of visitors wishing to enjoy the beauty of the trees. If you’re visiting in 2020, you will want to know the cherry blossom forecast. Read on to find out more.
January-February
Many of the people wanting to visit in January and February are there to enjoy the fantastic winter sports destinations that the mountains boast. The heavy snowfall that gathers on the mountain ranges in these months has a powdery quality which makes for perfect snow-sport conditions. However, as we are sure you can appreciate, this is not the place to enjoy cherry blossoms. To view the stunning Spring Time phenomenon, you would have to travel to the southern islands. Here you will find a slightly different sort of experience, but you can still enjoy the cherry blossom festival that takes place in Yogi Park. Here you will discover the gorgeous cherry blossoms of Okinawa. Their colouring is deeper pink and the blossoms, rather peculiarly, bloom in a downward direction, which makes them different from the Cherry Blossoms found in other areas of Japan.
March – April
March and April are the ultimate times to visit mainland Japan to view the spectacular Cherry Blossom Displays and enjoy a festival or two in the process. The months of March and April welcome the most promising times to view the blossoms across the country. When staying in Tokyo, we recommend that you opt for the Shinjuku Gyoen Nation Garden. Voted one of the top 10 viewing spots for cherry blossoms, this Nation Garden is a fantastic place to enjoy a picnic, after taking a stroll down the picture-perfect paths that travel deep among the vibrant blossoms. When staying in Tokyo, you should look no further than Shinagawa Hotel Accommodation. Here, not only will you find timelessly elegant interiors and cosy rooms, but also an impressive selection of facilities and over 9 restaurants!
May
May is the latest time that you can enjoy Cherry Blossoms in Japan, and you will have to travel north to do so. Although the forecasts for Mainland Japan show that the blossoms will be long gone, you can still catch them in the Northern Island of Hokkaido. Hokkaido is known and loved for it’s fantastic winter sports facilities, but all too often doesn’t get the credit it deserves for its stunning springtime displays. We recommend that after you’ve explored Tokyo and treated yourself to a stay at the gorgeous Shinagawa Hotel’s Accommodation, you head up to this stunning part of Japan. The Shirogane Blue Pond is a picturesque location where you can unwind away from the crowds of the city and enjoy the blossoms next to the crystal clear waters of the pond, which on a still day, mirror the vibrant colours of the blossoms.
When you think of Tokyo, what comes to mind? For us, it’s futuristic images of spectacular skyscrapers standing among historic landmarks that have strong links to the countries culture. However, after days of exploring the sites and experiencing the iconic fashion for which Tokyo is known, we imagine you will want to sample some of the finest food in the city. Although Tokyo has some incredibly famously wacky establishments like the Robot Restaurant, you certainly don’t want to miss the stylish ones. Read on to discover our top picks for stylish restaurants in Tokyo, 2020.
Shinagawa Restaurants
Shinagawa Hotel is as the height of sophistication in Tokyo. The interiors ooze with effortless elegance, and they boast an impressive array of facilities for all ages to enjoy. Our favourite feature, however, is the Shinagawa Hotel Restaurants. Yes, you read that right, this impressive hotel is home to a whopping 9 restaurants, which offer cuisine from all over the globe, leaving little need to leave the hotel at all! When considering the most stylish of these, we would have to start with the Dining Bar Table 9. Floor to ceiling windows provides panoramic views of the iconic Tokyo Skyline, which is beautifully complemented by the deep blue interiors of the restaurant. The Ichozaka is also an incredibly stylish restaurant that should also be included. This Shinagawa Hotel Restaraunt is pristine, modern, and includes a spectacular show kitchen.
Kichijoji Sun Tama Bar
If you want a change from the wonderful Shinagawa Hotel Restaurants, then we recommend that you head straight for Kichijoji Sun Tama Bar. This restaurant not only serves delicious Japanese cuisine, but it also has a super-stylish and completely unique interior. Kichijoji Sun Tama Bar is so unlike others, as it’s interiors change with the seasons. In the spring, the pinks from the cherry blossoms that bloom throughout the country are emulated through stunning light displays in this restaurant. The same can be said for all other seasons, from the warm colours of Autumn to the snowflakes of winter. This restaurant is a brilliant, insta-worthy destination for those seeking a stylish dining experience.
Barliminal Roppongi
If it’s style you’re after, then a trip to Roppongi should definitely be on the itinerary. What Times Square is to New York, is what Roppongi is to Tokyo. Among the giant digitalised billboards, you will find pristine streets that are lined with some of the fanciest shops in the city. Displays of super high-tech gadgets sit alongside some of the most famous designer brands in the world. Here, you will find Barliminal Roppongi. This is perfect for those who are seeking a little change from Japanese cuisine, as Barliminal is a wonderful Italian Restaurant. This spectacular restaurant has projection mapping on all surfaces, meaning you’re never entirely sure what you will see, but beneath you, you will find beautiful water streams which make for a unique and very stylish dining experience in Tokyo. Although it is very different from the Shinagawa Hotel Restaurants, it is equally, but differently fashionable.
